Septic Tank Maintenance Tips
Septic tank maintenance is key to the longevity and proper function of a septic system. The better a household treats its wastewater and solid waste, the less likely the septic system will need repairs or failure.
Avoid Drain services non-flushables or dumping items down your drains. Non-flushables include cigarette butts, diapers, feminine products, paper towels and grease. Putting these down the drain reduces the efficiency of a septic system and can pollute groundwater. Also, use the lowest-flow toilet possible for your home to minimize water and sewage waste. Replace older toilets with 1.6-gallon high-efficiency models that can reduce water and sewage use by 25 to 30 percent.
Install a septic system-approved garbage disposal only if necessary. Garbage disposals increase the amount of solid waste that enters the septic system and requires tanks to be pumped more often.
Keep the drainfield area clear of trees, shrubs, vehicles and gardens. Tree roots can ensnarl and damage drainfield pipes, while heavy vehicles or plants can cause the soil to collapse.
Have a professional inspect the system annually. Make sure the inspector is licensed and certified to inspect and repair septic systems.
Schedule regular septic tank pumpings based on the sludge and scum levels measured by your septic tank professional. Without regular cleaning and pumping, solids may escape the septic tank and enter the drainfield, clogging soil pores and causing a host of unpleasant and costly problems. Septic systems are designed to last for decades, but only if they’re properly maintained.
